Our Commitment

World Citizenry & Global Responsibility

WHEREAS,

in recognition of the greatly increased interdependence of the world in this age of threats of war, global warming, poverty, and starvation,

WHEREAS,

realizing that the common interests of mankind can only be met through world cooperation and collaboration,

WHEREAS,

seeking to free humanity from the curse of greed and from hoarding resources, and

WHEREAS,

sharing awareness that we can best serve our families, bands, organizations, tribes, and or nations when we also exhibit behaviors conducive to world citizenry,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,

that we, the President and Leadership of Kawthra Six Clan Alliance recognize the sovereign right of our citizens to declare that their consideration for humanity extends beyond our Alliance and nation. We hereby join with other concerned people and entities of the world in a declaration that we share in this world responsibility, and that our citizens are, in this sense, citizens of the world.

We pledge our efforts as world citizens to the establishment of world peace based on just world law and to the use of world resources, in conjunction with Indigenous populations, where the resources are sourced for the inherent good of humanity, internationally, but without subjugation of Indigenous populations.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,

that as a symbol of our commitment as world citizens, we proudly display this proclamation on our website and urge other Native American and Indigenous Nations and organizations to do the same.

International Framework

International Protections and Obligations

United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP, 2007)

  • Article 3: Indigenous peoples have the right to self-determination.
  • Article 8(1): States shall provide effective mechanisms for prevention of, and redress for, any action which has the aim or effect of depriving Indigenous peoples of their integrity as distinct peoples, or of their cultural values or ethnic identities.
  • Articles 26–28: Indigenous peoples have the right to the lands, territories, and resources which they have traditionally owned, occupied, or otherwise used. States must provide restitution or, when not possible, just, fair, and equitable compensation.
  • Article 32: States must obtain free, prior, and informed consent before approving any project affecting Indigenous lands or resources.

American Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (ADRIP, OAS 2016)

  • Article XXV: Indigenous peoples have the right to maintain and strengthen their distinctive spiritual and material relationship with their lands, territories, waters, and resources.
  • Article XXIX: States shall provide redress, through effective mechanisms, for actions that deprive Indigenous peoples of their lands, territories, or resources.
  • Article VI: Indigenous peoples have the right to recognition of their juridical personality and their own forms of organization.

ILO Convention 169 (Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, 1989)

  • Article 14: The rights of ownership and possession of the peoples concerned over the lands which they traditionally occupy shall be recognized.
  • Article 15: The rights of the peoples concerned to the natural resources pertaining to their lands shall be specially safeguarded.
  • Article 16: Indigenous peoples shall not be removed from the lands they occupy. Where relocation is necessary, it shall take place only with their free and informed consent, and with compensation and option of return.

Northwest Ordinance (1787, U.S. Foundational Law)

Article III: "The utmost good faith shall always be observed towards the Indians; their lands and property shall never be taken from them without their consent; and in their property, rights, and liberty, they never shall be invaded or disturbed, unless in just and lawful wars authorized by Congress."

This foundational U.S. law, predating the Constitution, affirms that dispossession of Indigenous lands without consent is unlawful.
